Bishop Nathaniel Jones, Jr. was born into the union of the late Nathaniel Jones, Sr. and Eurusla Redwood Jones on December 21, 1931.  He accepted the Lord Jesus Christ at the age of 12, at which time he also received the baptism of the Holy Ghost.  Since that time, he remained faithful to the Lord’s calling.

Bishop Jones was called to the ministry in 1951 and served under the tutelage of the late Bishop J. A. Blake for approximately 12 years.  In 1952, Bishop Jones married Mrs. Lula Mae Armstrong, and from this union they were blessed with seven children.  In 1958, he was ordained an Elder in the Church of God in Christ, and in 1960 he moved to Barstow, California where he was assigned to the Pastorate of the Barstow Church of God in Christ.

Upon his arrival in Barstow, Elder Jones began to evangelize with such zeal that souls began to be added to the church.  In 1961, Elder Jones was assigned as District Superintendent.  On May 17, 1965, God called Elder Jones to the full time ministry.  Continuing to seek God, he received God’s guidance and was given a vision to build God a house on top of a mountain.  With six members, they rallied and built a church to house the saints.  The church experienced steady growth during the subsequent 30 years and reached nearly 300 members in the congregation.

In 1970, Bishop Jones was appointed as Chairman of the National Sunday School Department, as well as the Secretary of the National Publishing Board.  In 1971, he was consecrated Bishop and appointed as Jurisdictional Bishop of Utah.  In 1976, Bishop Jones was appointed as Jurisdictional Bishop of Idaho, and in 1985 he was appointed as the National Executive Director of the Charles Harrison Mason System of Bible Colleges.  Due to his successful leadership skills, Bishop Jones was ultimately assigned to serve the Church of God in Christ in 1987 as Jurisdictional Bishop of the Southern California Third Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction.

Bishop Jones earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree, Linda Vista Baptist College and Seminary, San Diego, California (1958); Master of Arts Degree, California School of Theology, Glendale, California (1972); Doctor of Divinity Degree, Trinity Hall Theological College and Seminary, Springfield, Illinois (1975); Doctor of Philosophy Degree, Postgraduate (a.b.d.) California School of Theology, Glendale, California (1976); and a Doctor of Education Degree, Postgraduate (a.b.d.), University of LaVerne, LaVerne, California (1984).

Bishop Jones held positions in several industry, community service and government associations including:  Member of Advisory Board to the Mayor of Barstow, Member of Barstow Community Hospital Board, President of Ministerial Association of Barstow, Innovator of Barstow Head Start Program, PTA life-time member; Commissioner, San Bernardino County Welfare, Advancement for People of Color in the Public Schools, NAACP life-time member, and Barstow Fire Department Board Member.

On Sunday, October 14, 2001, Bishop Nathaniel Jones, Jr. closed his eyes and stepped into eternity.  Superintendent David A. Norman succeeded him as the Senior Pastor of the Barstow Church of God in Christ.
